Wow! Can you believe it is Week 4 already? We have a busy week with several quizzes and tests. Next Monday, Interim Reports will go home. Tomorrow, in the Tuesday Communicator, I will be sending home your child's AR tests so far. This is just for you to discuss with your child and see what tests he/she has taken and how well he/she is doing on the tests. Their average on the AR tests (that I will get later this week) will count as a reading test score.
Reading - This week we are focusing on two important skills: cause and effect and using context clues to determine the meaning. We have ten fairly challenging vocabulary words this week, so please help your child to use these words and be on the lookout for them: isolated, remote, obtain, avid, preserve, extreme, access, virtual, impassable and devour. The children all have their reading goals now. We have had several talks about how the students are responsible for their reading. I am no longer assigning 30 minutes of reading each night, instead, they are working towards those reading goals. I expect around 30 minutes each night, but of course I know that is not always doable. So, I have encouraged the children that if they have a busy night and don't get to read, they should try to read a little extra another night.
Spelling - Long and short i
Math - We will have a short quiz on rounding and place value tomorrow. We will continue to work on number sense this week as we work more on the 100 chart. This week's multiplication focus is on 5.
Language - We have been working on nouns and will have a short noun quiz on Wednesday.
Science - We are getting into the study of sound - what makes sound and how we can change the pitch and volume of sound.
Alabama History - We will talk about climate tomorrow and then have a short review before our test on Wednesday. The students should be studying the terms and questions that are in their Alabama History notebooks. They should know terms like latitude, longitude, cardinal directions, intermediate directions, globe, geography, hemisphere, political map and physical map. They also should be able to label the continents and oceans.
Have a wonderful week! Thank you for your help and support at home!
