Two Fridays ago, when I announced to the class that we would be getting out early due to the possibility of snow, their first reaction was, as expected, excitement, but their second one surprised me. Many students were upset. Yes, upset. Why? Well, because they would not get to begin work on their Passion Project. How upset they were about missing this opportunity made me realize what a great undertaking this will be!
The students will be working on their Passion Projects in the classroom about once a week for most of the semester. I have been working to find each student a mentor, someone, hopefully, who knows something about the topic and can guide the student in his/her research. There are very little requirements to the Passion Project: students choose a topic that interests them, research it and present their findings (in a variety of ways) to others. That's it!
Friday afternoon, many of our mentors were able to join us, and the students were extremely excited! There are still a few mentors that I am reaching out to, and of course many of the mentors cannot attend every Friday, but we are all very thankful for their time, energy, guidance and support!
