4th Nine Weeks: Week 7

Today included, there are only 14 school days left.  Where has the year gone?  Wow!  It will be a busy three weeks as we continue learning the fourth grade material and pack in plenty of time to reflect on and celebrate the past year.

Reading: The students have started book clubs.  They chose four excellent books to read in small groups.  While reading these books, the students are looking out for signposts that will act as great discussion points in our small group discussions twice a week.  Ask your child to tell you more about the book that he/she is reading.

Spelling: The words this week are a bit longer as we focus on three-syllable words.  I will be helping the students to practice breaking words into syllables to help them spell these longer words.

Writing: The students are wrapping up their persuasive essays this week by editing, revising and perfecting them.

Math: We will complete our study of decimals this week as we work on the four operations with decimals.  We will also begin looking at angles and lines of symmetry.

Science: The students are working on a small project in the classroom about the adaptations of specific animals.  We will then begin talking about metamorphosis.

Alabama History:  Our big focus for the week is the Wax Museum!  Look for a letter that was sent home today (Monday) about this exciting event.  The students will also be learning more about life during the late 19th century/early 20th century.  They'll be looking at segregation, the economy and technology.

On Friday, we had a wonderful guest speaker: Judge McGuire.  He is a historian who has studied Alabama Indians.  The students listened to his enthusiastic story telling to learn more about the Creek War.  Ask your child about some of the great stories including hearing about how some dogs became heroes of a battle!
