Week 12

Wow!  November is already here!  There is a lot going on this month, from a PTO meeting tomorrow night, to the Community Luncheon on Thursday, Veteran's Day, Grandpal's Day and oh yes, Thanksgiving!

Grandpal's Day is set for November 22nd.  It is a day when the children are encouraged to invite an adult into the school such as a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a neighbor or a special friend from church.  The 4th grade grandpals will be visiting the school from 10:30 - 11:15.  If your child does not have a grandpal, please let me know and we will be sure to find him/her one!

Reading - The skills focus this week is on author's purpose as well as the "shades of meaning" of words, meaning even though the definition might be correct, does a particular word really fit in the situation.  We are also talking about different types of questions that will help as we try to discuss books.  The vocabulary words this week are: discouraged, toured, towered, mournful, triumph, debut, permission, border, stubborn and hauling.

Spelling - The spelling skill is more r-controlled vowels.

Language - Verbs!  We are learning all about verbs and how important they are!

Math - The multiplication facts the students should be focusing on this week are the 12s!  That's right, it is our last one.  After this, the kids should be proficient with all of their multiplication facts up to 12 x 12.  This week we are continuing to look at multiplication with a focus on finding easy ways to solve problems that look difficult.

Science - We will begin our forces and motion unit tomorrow.  I have no doubt the students will enjoy using the K-nex pieces to create vehicles!

Alabama History - We finished our study of the early Native Americans today.  We will be starting a big unit on the explorers, the American Revolution and what happened to the Native Americans that once called Alabama home.  We learned a cool fact today about where Alabama got its name.  See if your child can tell you what Alabama means!
