The children helped me try out a fun new app today called "Tiny Planet" as they posed for these photos:

Week 3, Fourth Nine Weeks

Reading: We will continue to look at nonfiction texts this week as we examine the features in nonfiction texts that help to further our understanding.  We will be reading about topics that we are covering in science and Alabama history.

Language: We will be writing and illustrating our student treasure books this week.  Order forms will come home in the Tuesday Communicator.  No matter if you would like to order one or not, please fill out the form.  There will be a copy in our classroom as well as a copy in our library, so your child can always borrow a copy if you choose not to order one!

Math: This week we will be multiplying a whole number by a fraction as well as beginning to convert fractions to decimals.

Science: The students will be learning more about how the moon and Earth are "connected."

Alabama History: We will continue to investigate why the North won the Civil War as we examine the advantages that the North had.  Later this week, we be watching part of Gone with the Wind to get a better picture of life before, during and after the Civil War.  Don't worry, we will stop watching well before that infamous line in the final scene! :)

YAMs

March is Youth Art Month and here at Shades Cahaba we like to celebrate by decorating YAMs and turning them into some of our favorite people and characters.  Seeing the creativity kids throughout the school have is a true joy!  If you get a chance to pop into the office this week to see them, I highly recommend it!  Here are the entries from our class:

Week 2, Fourth Nine Weeks

Reading - The students have made new (and their final) reading goals for the year.  Today and tomorrow, we will be finishing our activities with the Grimm Fairy Tale, "The Fisherman and His Wife."  Later on in the week, we will be discussing text features found in non-fiction texts and reading short books on topics about history and government.

Language - This week, we will begin working on our Student Treasures books.  Each student will be writing and illustrating pages in a class book.  Look for order forms to be coming home soon!

Math - We will continue to work on comparing fractions as well as adding and subtracting fractions this week as we work on our fraction menu activities.

Science - The students will be learning about components of our solar system this week as they research items such as asteroids and comets.

Alabama History - I must say that teaching the Civil War is one of my very favorite things about fourth grade.  I have also thoroughly enjoyed the students enthusiasm on this topic.  This week, we will be examining differences in the North and the South as well as reasons that the North won the war.

Week 1, Fourth Nine Weeks

Yes, it is already the 4th nine weeks!  Wow, where did the time go?

Reading: This week, we will be reading a fairy tale, "The Fisherman and his Wife."  The students will be working to investigate one specific key question throughout the week as well as working on their fluency as we reread the passage.  Students will also be setting new (and their last) reading goals for the year.

Math: Students continue to work on comparing fractions using equivalent fractions and landmark fractions such as 1/2.  For instance, to compare 3/8 and 7/12, I know that 3/8 is less than half, but 7/12 is more, so 7/12 must be larger.  Students will also be adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.

Language: On Thursday, students will have a test on commas, conjunctions and clauses.  They will need to be able to identify and properly use conjunctions, dependent clauses and independent clauses.  Students will also need to know the comma rules we have discussed and be able to use them properly.  There are websites with games and quizzes on Schoology that should help the students study.

Alabama History: The end of this unit has taken longer than expected (I'll blame all the crazy weather, but I don't think that is all!), but our Becoming a State test will be Wednesday - there is a StudyStack for this.  After that, we will begin the Civil War.

Science: Students will be learning about objects in space such as asteroids and comets.

Final Week, Third Nine Weeks

The students brought home some really cool looking flashlights today!  If your electrician did not quite finish his/hers at school, I'd love to see a picture of it once it is finished!

Reading: The students will be finishing their book club books this week and completing extension activities about the books.

Language: We are learning all about commas this week and exactly when and where to use them.

Math: Fractions will continue to be our focus for several weeks.  This week we are focused on comparing and ordering fractions.  By the end of the week, I also hope to be working on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.

Science: The students completed their electricity unit today with the flashlights.  We will review tomorrow and their test will be on Wednesday.

Alabama History: Plans could always change, but I am hoping to finish our Alabama History unit of "Becoming a State" by Wednesday or Thursday so that we should be prepared for a test on Friday.  The written project is due on Monday.
