Tree Problem

This beautiful tree was created by Mrs. Mooresmith and SCE students using recycled cans from the lunchroom.

To go along with the tree there is a math challenge! If children complete the challenge by Friday and turn their entry into Mrs. Mooresmith, they will be entered into a contest to win some art supplies!

Bell Ringers

We had such a good time ringing the bell and spreading holiday cheer on Saturday!  I was so proud of the chidlren for their warm hears (even with cold toes!), cheerful smiles and eagerness to help.  So many passers-by commented on how wonderful it was to see young volunteers.  I know the Salvation Army will use the donations we collected to make a big difference in our community.

Final Week, Second Nine Weeks

Reading: Students are working to complete their reading goals in this, the final week of the nine weeks.  Many students have already met their three reading goals!  We will be finishing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this week!  The students have enjoyed reading it, looking out for signposts and getting to know the characters.  There will be a vocabulary quiz on Thursday.  Students can use StudyStack to help them review the words and their meanings, but it is also crucial that the students can use the words appropriately.

Math: We are continuing to work on multiplication, especially focusing on double digit multiplication.  The students have many strategies recorded in their notebooks to help them.

Grammar: Adjectives continue to be our focus.  This week, we will be looking more specifically at comparative adjectives.

Alabama History: We are finishing our discussion of the Creek War and will soon be discussing the Trail of Tears.

Science: We have completed our study of motion and design, looking specificially at what forces are and what effect different types of forces have on the motion of objects.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Students can review the terms on StudyStack and should also be prepared to discuss what they learned from the experiments we completed.

Week 7, Second Nine Weeks

Reading: The students will be finishing Riding Freedom this week and beginning the classic story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Language: This week, our focus will be on adjectives!  Students will be working on identifying adjectives as well as using them to improve their writing.

Math:  Our focus continues to be on multiplication.  The students are realizing how important it is to have those multiplication facts memorized as we are working with them more and more.  Later this week, the students will have a quiz on factors and multiples.  There are websites on Schoology that they can use to practice and there are a couple of apps that they really love: Factor Pop! and Factor Samurai.

Alabama History: We will be discussing the tensions between the settlers the Native Americans as we discuss the Creek War.

Science: The students will be evaluating friction this week as well as building a sail and testing the effects of wind on a sail.
