Fraction Apps

Fractions are tough for everybody!  We have a lot to learn this year and it is important that students understand the foundation of the topic.  With all of the technology out there, I thought I would share a few apps that might be helpful either when your child is doing his/her homework or as games to play for extra practice.

Virtual Manipulatives (a green app with purple VM) - This app has manipulatives that we use in the classroom, like fraction bars, that could be a big help when comparing fractions and/or adding fractions.

Fraction Basic (a blue app with colorful "pie" pieces) - This app is a set of instructional videos to show how to do different operations with fractions.

Motion Math (a blue app with a sort of fireball on it) - This app is a fun game but also a wonderful skill builder.  Children move the device back and forth to let the fraction "fall" onto the correct space in the 0 to 1 number line.

Pizza 1 (a blue app with a "chef") - This app shows pizza slices and children identify the correct fraction.  This is fairly basic, but also important to have as a starting point for fractions.

Pizza 2 (a green app with a "chef") - This app is similar to Pizza 1, but it deals more with simplifying fractions which we started today.

Chicken Coop Fractions (an app with a made chicken on it) - The free app has some fun games that have to do with improper fractions and converting fractions to decimals.  This app may be a great challenge for a child who is doing really well in fractions or perhaps will be good for others after we do more with fractions.

Everyday Mathematics Equivalent Fractions (an app with McGraw-Hill in red at the bottom under two fraction flash cards) - This $2 app is like a game of solitaire but instead of looking for matching numbers, you have to look for equivalent fractions.

Fractions. Smart Pirate (a green app with a pirate on it) - This $2 app has a variety of games that will go over many of the skills that we will be doing in the classroom like comparing fractions, simplifying fractions and equivalent fractions.

These websites also have some great games:
